At Castel, we are committed to providing our pupils with the essential skills they need to become confident and successful writers. Building on the strong foundation of our Read Write Inc. Phonics programme in Key Stage 1, we have now introduced the Read Write Inc. Spelling scheme for all children from Summer term Year 2 up to Year 6.

Read Write Inc. Spelling

Why we use it...

We have chosen this specific programme for our school for a number of key reasons:

  • Consistency and Progression: The scheme provides a consistent and progressive approach to spelling, ensuring a smooth transition from phonics and a clear learning journey throughout the junior years.
  • Raising Standards: By focusing on the explicit teaching of spelling rules, we aim to raise the overall standard of spelling across all subjects.
  • Building Confidence: The interactive and structured nature of the programme helps children to feel more confident and secure in their spelling abilities.

How the Programme Works

Read Write Inc. Spelling is a short, daily programme, with lessons lasting just 15 minutes. It is designed to be interactive and engaging for our pupils. Each unit begins with a short video to introduce the topic, and then children use dedicated workbooks to practise what they have learned. The programme:

  • Teaches Spelling Rules: It systematically teaches the most common spelling rules and patterns, helping children to understand how words are built.
  • Builds on Phonics: It naturally follows on from our phonics teaching, using familiar strategies like ‘dots and dashes’ to help children break down words into sounds and build them back up with accuracy.
  • Focuses on Application: A core element of the scheme is encouraging children to apply the rules they have learned in their independent writing, helping them to transfer their spelling knowledge into their own work.
  • Teaches Exceptions: The programme also addresses ‘exception words’ (sometimes known as ‘tricky words’) which don’t follow the rules and must be learned by sight.

How to Support Your Child's Spelling at Home

We believe that a strong partnership between school and home is vital for your child’s success. Although we don’t set spelling homework, you can help your child with their spelling by:

  • Practising ‘Red’ and ‘Orange’ Words: Not all words follow the rules we learn in the programme. These ‘exception words’ are known as ‘Red’ words in the Read Write Inc. scheme. Some words that are temporarily tricky are known as ‘Orange’ words.  Regular, short bursts of practice with these words can make a big difference. You can find a copy of the flash cards here:

  • Making it Fun: Use games like magnetic letters on the fridge, word searches, or a simple game of ‘Hangman’ to practise spellings.

  • Encouraging Reading and Writing: The more your child reads and writes, the more they will naturally encounter and become familiar with different words and spelling patterns.

  • Praising Effort: Celebrate your child’s progress and effort, regardless of the outcome. A positive attitude towards spelling is key to building confidence.

We are excited about the positive impact this new scheme will have on our pupils’ literacy development and thank you for your support at home.
