  • Bailiwick Curriculum

The Bailiwick Curriculum is a broad, diverse and ambitious curriculum which shares with our children and young people the rich legacy of human meaning-making. By engaging with humankind's intellectual and cultural heritage, our children and young people are enabled to join in with the great conversation about what things mean that has been taking place since the dawn of time. Becoming a participant in this conversation prepares the children and young people of our islands for the opportunities, experiences and responsibilities and challenges of living in the 21st century.

To be able to join in this conversation is the entitlement of all our children and young people. We want our children and young people to understand and be curious about the world in which they live. We want all our children and young people to thrive, to grow into healthy adults who make a positive contribution to their community.  We want them to know about their islands and the world beyond these islands. We want them to learn the skills to manage their own lives and to be successful within the world of work.

The Bailiwick Curriculum is intended to develop all children and young people as: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

Children and young people also need to be ready for tests and examinations both at school and in later life. The Bailiwick Curriculum helps schools to plan to achieve all these things.

The curriculum has been written to flow from age 5 to 19. Emphasis is placed on meaningful and purposeful learning, knowledge acquisition, skills development and personal achievement.

The curriculum is written to stay as broad as possible for as long as possible. The curriculum should be taught in ways that enable all children and young people to experience the satisfaction that comes through successfully meeting a challenge.

This is in line with the aims of the Education Strategy and  the Children and Young People's Plan and outlined in pdf icon Bailiwick Curriculum handbook [6Mb] and associated subject entitlement documents which are shared below.
